LEARN HOW DEMOCRACY REFORMS BECOME LAW IN NEBRASKA
Twenty-six states, including Nebraska & DC, allow citizen-led ballot initiatives and have a process for citizens to get measures on the ballot to be voted on to become law. This means that a group of citizens may place a measure on the ballot through gathering signatures, and, in some states, getting legislative approval once the set number of signatures is reached. Nebraskans for Independent Redistricting, a nonpartisan coalition of Nebraska nonprofit organizations, on March 5 introduced a ballot initiative that would prohibit the manipulation of voting districts – a process known as gerrymandering. If qualified and passed by voters in November, the proposal would create an independent Citizens Commission to oversee the constitutionally mandated redrawing of Nebraska’s congressional and state legislative districts.
(Common Cause Nebraska) Nebraska Coalition Groups Propose a Ballot Initiative for an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission
Nebraskans for Independent Redistricting proposed a ballot initiative that would take the power to draw voting maps from politicians and give it to the people. Yesterday the coalition group of nonpartisan Nebraska nonprofits filed paperwork for a petition drive. At the end of this month they will start gathering the required signatures to turn it into a ballot measure. If passed by voters in November, the proposal would create a nine-person independent citizens commission to oversee the redrawing of district maps.
