Twenty-six states, including Nebraska & DC, allow citizen-led ballot initiatives and have a process for citizens to get measures on the ballot to be voted on to become law. Nebraskans for Independent Redistricting, a nonpartisan coalition of Nebraska nonprofit organizations, on March 5 introduced a ballot initiative that would prohibit the manipulation of voting districts – a process known as gerrymandering. (Common Cause Nebraska) Nebraska Coalition Groups Propose a Ballot Initiative for an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission
Nebraskans for Independent Redistricting proposed a ballot initiative that would take the power to draw voting maps from politicians and give it to the people. Yesterday the coalition group of nonpartisan Nebraska nonprofits filed paperwork for a petition drive. At the end of this month they will start gathering the required signatures to turn it into a ballot measure. If passed by voters in November, the proposal would create a nine-person independent citizens commission to oversee the redrawing of district maps.
