LEARN HOW DEMOCRACY REFORMS BECOME LAW IN MICHIGAN
Twenty-six states, including Michigan & DC allow citizen-led ballot initiatives and have a process for citizens to get measures on the ballot to be voted on to become law. This means that a group of citizens may place a measure on the ballot through gathering signatures, and, in some states, getting legislative approval once the set number of signatures is reached. Local groups concerned for Michigan voting rights
Copper Country community members are raising concerns about a petition drive that could tighten voting laws across the state of Michigan.A downstate organization known as Secure MI Vote has proposed a list of changes to Michigan election procedure. To advance its proposal, the group is using an unusual provision in Michigan’s constitution that allows “resident-initiated legislation” to circumvent the Governor’s veto.
